Preemergent Misconceptions

A common misconception about preemergents is that they control germination of all seeds. Unfortunately that isn't the case which is why client participation in their weed control and fertilization program is vitally important.

To prevent seed head development and reduce seed pressure on a lawn, mowing should be done weekly. Obviously life sometimes makes weekly mowing difficult so when that happens mowing your lawn biweekly is acceptable although not as beneficial as weekly.

First, weekly mowing prevents seed head development on most plants. It also stimulates growth of your lawn which helps thicken it up and shade out many seeds, preventing suitable conditions for germination.

So, if you are trying to rid your lawn of weeds whether through DIY methods or a paid contractor, mowing is one of the most important cultural practices you can do to speed that process up.
